Homologous Chromosomes

The term is used to describe chromosome of similar structure that pair together during meiosis, a type of cell division happening during reproduction. The prefix ‘homo’ suggests being ‘the same’ or ‘to agree’ and thus, explains the similarity between the chromosomes when the paring happens. Chromosomes have the same number of genes arranged in the same order; moreover, we inherit 23 chromosomes from each parent. Chromosomes are the building blocks of life and determine factors such as hair and eye colour.
