A grandparentage DNA test can be used when an alleged father (or mother) is not available for testing and there is a need to confirm the paternity of the children. This test will therefore determine if the grandparents (from the father's side) are the true biological relatives of the child or not therefore confirming the paternity of the father.
The laws of genetics and heredity make the grandparentage testing possible. A child inherits half their genetic material from their father. In turn, when that child becomes a parent, he or she will pass on half their DNA to their child. This ‘handing down’ of DNA makes this type of test a reliable means of determining paternity.
Requirements for the Grandparentage DNA Test
When planning to do a grandparentage test, we recommended to test both grandparents if possible as this will assist in obtaining more conclusive results. If this is not possible, then it is possible to perform the test with only one grandparent. As in all relationship testing, the sample of a common parent (normally the Mother) is also recommended. The price of the grandparents test will change according to the number of people being tested.

1. DNA analysis of single grandparent: this involves testing just ONE of the grandparents. We also recommend taking samples of the mother’s DNA.
2. DNA analysis of both grandparents: this is the more recommended of the two tests and included both the testing of the grandmother and grandfather. The mother’s DNA is also useful to include but not necessary.
In both types of tests the DNA profiles analyzed are compared with that of the grandchild in order to whether there is a biological relationship. The mother’s samples are included to quickly eliminate her share of the DNA in the heredity process, which in turn leaves just the paternal half to test.
