Requirements for the Grandparentage DNA Test
A granparents test is done when the alleged father is not avalable for a paternity DNA test. We recommended testing both grandparents if available as this will help obtain more conclusive results. If only one grandparents if available, a grandparentage test can still be done. As in all relationship testing, the sample of a common parent (normally the Mother) is always recommended. The price of the grandparents test will change according to the number of people being tested.
Options for Grandparentage Analysis
1. DNA analysis of single grandparent: this test requires DNA samples from just ONE of the grandparents. We strongly recommend adding the mother's sample in this particular case.
2. DNA analysis of both grandparents: We strongly recommended this test in which both the grandmother and grandfather are tested. The mother’s DNA sample should also be included if available.
In both types of tests the DNA profiles analyzed are compared with that of the grandchild to establish a biological relationsip. The mother’s samples are included to quickly eliminate her share of the DNA in the heredity process, which in turn leaves just the paternal half to test.
