Prenatal Paternity Testing | easyDNA USA

Frequent Questions: Non Invasive Prenatal Paternity Testing

What level of accuracy can I expect?

Our prenatal paternity test is highly accurate and will provide an inclusion of paternity of 99% or higher if the alleged father is the biological father of the child. If the father is not biological related to the child, the probability of paternity will be of 0%. For the sake of being scientific, we could say: if the probability that the alleged father’s DNA contains the genetic markers required of the biological father is greater than 99.9% when compared to random individuals, paternity is concluded. If the alleged father matches no better than an unrelated individual, paternity is excluded).

What is the cost of the prenatal paternity test?

The cost of the non invasive prenatal paternity in is XXXXX

When can I take the non invasive prenatal paternity test?

The test can be carried out as early as the 10th week of pregnancy. This means you must be 10 weeks pregnant starting from the first day of your LMP (last menstrual period). Our pregnancy calculator will help you know in what week of pregnancy you are.

What payment options are available?

We have several payment options available. You can opt to pay a partial deposit of 50% of the total cost of the test. We will send you the kit and you can make the rest of the payment upon receipt of your samples at the laboratory. Laboratory testing will not commence unless full payment has been made.

Why choose a non-invasive DNA test while pregnant?

The advantages of a non invasive prenatal paternity test over invasive prenatal testing procedures include:

  • The test is safe; totally risk free
  • It requires just a simple medical blood draw
  • It is time efficient- a blood draw just takes around 10 minutes to complete
  • The cost be lower as the blood draw is a standard procedure and does not require a specialist
  • Results are as accurate
  • Does not need insertion of needles or catheters into the womb

What are the disadvantages of invasive prenatal sampling procedures?

Amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling are invasive tests to carry out in pregnancy. This is because of the insertion of utensils into the womb that are needed to collect fetal DNA. In the former case, a needle is used to draw a sample of amniotic fluid whilst in the latter; it is a catheter that is inserted to collect a sample of what are known as chorionic villi. Because the womb is penetrated, there is the risk of miscarriage through stresses caused to the unborn baby; if the needle comes into contact with the baby’s limbs, deformities can result. The costs are also higher.

What can you tell me about the science behind the test?

An expectant mother carries her baby’s DNA in her blood stream. This fetal DNA gets into the mother’s blood because of the constant exchange of blood and nutrients between mother and child. The challenge was separating this fetal DNA from the maternal blood. To learn more details, why not read the science behind the prenatal test?

Can I do the test the moment the child is born?

If you can wait until the birth of the baby to know the paternity of the child then you can do a post natal paternity test. The moment the child is born a DNA sample can be collected by rubbing a swab into its mouth and sent for testing alongside the alleged father’s DNA samples.

Do I need to test both alleged fathers?

We strongly recommend testing both alleged fathers if they are or you suspect they might be closely related or from a small ethnic group. The genetic similarity between males in such cases makes it important to have both their DNA profiles to help establish paternity.

What do I do if the alleged father is not available for the prenatal paternity test?
In cases where the alleged father is not available for the test we will not be able to carry out a prenatal paternity test. Our non invasive test requires blood samples and for this particular type of test, we are unable to use any other type of DNA sample.

How are the samples collected for a non invasive prenatal paternity test?

Sample collection is via a standard medical blood draw taken from the vein, normally in the arm. We need blood samples from the mother and the alleged fathers. Our sample collection page will give you more in depth information about this aspect of the test.

What will my blood sampling kit contain?

You kit will contain blood collection tubes, instructions, consent forms and a prepaid DHL pouch which you will use to send us back your samples. The kit has been carefully designed for this type of test. You will need to simply go to the person chosen to collect blood samples and once sampling is complete, send these off for laboratory analysis.

Do test participants have to have their samples collected at the same time?

Yes, we strongly recommend you send us your blood samples on the same day they are collected; this will help maximize chances of success when analyzed in the laboratory. The return DHL courier pouch we provide ensures timely receipt of samples and avoidance of postal losses or delays.

What do I do if the alleged fathers live in different locations?

If the alleged fathers live in different locations we can send out separate kits to separate addresses. It is up to the test participants in this case to coordinate blood sample collection and dispatch of samples to the laboratory in such a way that all samples arrive within a short time of each other.
Please note there will be an additional cost for the second kit.

How do I return the samples?

We have provided a return DHL prepaid pouch which must be used to send samples back. The cost for the pouch is covered in the total cost of the non invasive prenatal paternity test. It is mandatory that you use it.

How will I receive my results?

Results will be sent to you by email. You can request a hard copy of the results for a small additional cost. The hard copy will arrive after the results by email.

Are there any hidden costs or added fees?
