Y Chromosome Testing

A Y-Chromosome Test (Y-STR Test) is used to determine if 2 or more males share the same paternal lineage. The cost of a Y chromosome test is of $399.

The Y Chromosome is passed on from father to son; the Y chromosome has a relatively low mutation rate and remains unchanged from generation to generation. If there is a direct male blood line than all males from that lineage will have an identical Y chromosome pattern.

Why Would one Need a Y Chromosome Test?

  • If you need to confirm paternity but the alleged father is unavailable for testing, testing the alleged father's male relatives and comparing their DNA to the alleged father's son/s can confirm whether there is a biological relationship.
  • Male siblings who need to know if they share the same father.
  • In Immigration cases, the test can be used as proof of relationship between males.
  • Adopted children searching for their biological or “birth” families can use a Y Chromosome test to confirm whether alleged relatives are blood relatives.
