About the Y chromosome

Due to New York State Department of Health regulations, we cannot offer any peace of mind paternity or relationship tests to New York residents. However, we can offer legal paternity and relationship tests in New York. Contact us or click here for more information.

Males from the same male parental line will also share the same Y chromosome profile.  Male offspring inherit their Y chromosome unchanged from their father and they will in turn, pass on the same Y chromosome if they themselves have male offspring. A female cannot directly carry out a Y chromosome test because she has no Y chromosome. However, she can still trace her paternal ancestry and carry out a Y chromosome test indirectly by asking any male biological relative to take the test on her behalf. The cost of the Y chromosome test is $299. Once the DNA samples are received at the laboratory, you will receive your comprehensive DNA analysis report in 5-7 working days.

Note: We can only guarantee standard result turnaround time when testing takes place solely using oral swab samples. Using a discreet sample for your test may lead to an increase in turnaround time.

When would a Y chromosome test be needed?

  • Y chromosome testing can be used in cases requiring a paternity test in which the alleged father is nowhere to be found or will not submit to the test.  In such instances, we can test a direct male relative of the alleged father with the DNA of another male to confirm whether the untested alleged father is in fact related to the person claiming to be a biological relative.
  • Two siblings wishing to confirm whether or not they have the same biological father can do so by doing a Y chromosome test.
  • Adopted children looking for either their real biological fathers or male family members can use a Y chromosome test in order to include or exclude potential fathers/relatives.
  • Y chromosome testing can be used in cases requiring legal proof of relationship between males such as legal cases or cases of immigration (more information about immigration testing can be found by clicking here).

About your Y test

Once your samples are received at the laboratory they will be made available to our clients within just 5-7 business days.  Your DNA test report will show whether the Y chromosome profiles match, thereby confirming or excluding a biological relationship.

If you have questions regarding the process for sample collection, please visit our sample collection guide HERE.  Any other questions can be directed to us via email where we will respond in a timely matter to assist you.

Interested in your ancient paternal ancestry?

EasyDNA offers ancestry DNA testing services. If you want to discover your ancient paternal ancestors and locate their origins thousands and thousands of years back, then we suggest doing a paternal lineage ancestry test. A paternal lineage ancestry test also relies on the analysis of the Y chromosome but the results will reveal much about your ancestry than a Y chromosome test would.

A Y chromosome test will only tell you whether two people have the same Y chromosome profile which confirms they have the same paternal lineage.

Siblingship testing

If siblings taking part in the same test are of mixed gender (ie. brothers and sisters need to compare their DNA against each other), then we suggest a full siblings DNA test. This test will confirm whether siblings tested are full siblings, half siblings or not siblings at all. The test offers accurate results depending on the amount of DNA shared between the test participants.
